Welcome to my online digs.

Come on in. Make yourself comfortable and look around. I'd offer you some crudités but seeing as this is the internet and all, we'd have a logistics problem on our hands.

My given name is Matthew Edward Morain, though I go by the much more manageable Matt. I am an interneter. Accountants account, builders build, drivers drive, and I internet. That means I apply my PhD background in digital rhetoric and social media to figure out what makes online communities tick, through creative trial and error.

Writing a dissertation that applies rhetorical theory to internet culture has taught me the important skill of translating arcane subject matter to multiple audiences. (You haven't seen "flabbergasted" until you've tried explaining Nyan Cat to a distinguished professor on your committee.) Creating, consuming, and curating online content has taught me how to connect with a network of really smart and interesting users, who all agree that you should hire me.*

I have a diverse communications background in social media research, outreach, speechwriting, technical writing, freelancing, editing, and academia. I also have a knack for analytical problem-solving, public speaking, and learning new technologies, and I've been told I smell quite good by at least three separate people.

In the immediate past, I identified as a doctoral candidate at North Carolina State University in Raleigh, NC, where I spent four years teaching and pursuing a PhD in Communication, Rhetoric, and Digital Media. My research focuses on digital rhetoric, internet culture, social media and the public sphere, and network theory and culture.

Poke around and learn about me, or send me an email and we can see about getting those crudités.
